Rebellion or Revolution: Perspective of a Plantation Owner Outside SC
For this discussion, review your readings for Unit 5 and read the following scenario carefully. Feel free to do research outside the course if you'd like other points of view.
It is the year 1776. You've been informed that the Continental Congress has approved a declaration of independence from Great Britain. In your mind, is this a revolution or a rebellion, and would you support the idea of independence?
Prepare a discussion where you explain, based on your readings, how different types of colonists would have responded to the idea of independence from the British Empire in 1776. To do this, adopt the role of ONE of the following individuals and explain who that person was and how that person viewed the events and propaganda leading up to the formal declaration of independence from Great Britain.
Choose ONE:
An enslaved person (male or female) living in Richmond, Virginia
A free black (male or female) living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A plantation owner outside Charleston, South Carolina
A member of the Oneida nation
A white, male merchant from New York City, New York
A white small farmer and veteran of the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts
Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone in the past. Think about what their life was like, and what their behavior and outlook might be. Try to justify your response by describing that life and outlook.
You must answer the question(s) asked in a minimum of 2 paragraphs and a maximum of 3 paragraphs.
