Capitalism is one of the brightest ideas mankind has ever had. In spite of this, it has proven more disastrous than expected. During the industrial revolution, capitalism accelerated at such a pace that it created a shock. In Menilmontant, Dimitri Kirsanoff depicts the shock that people underwent during early twentieth century. The director tells the story from the perspective of two young women who happen in the city during the advent of industrial revolution. Their lives are consumed by day-to-day work such that they have a hard time waking up in the morning. Time is an important factor in the capitalist world and Kirsanoff regularly shows images of clocks to emphasize this. But the capitalist system does not just consume people’s time, it also takes away their innocence. The two young women, once innocent, become taken away by the city as one gets pregnant and the other becomes a prostitute.
