The current theme, belief, is an illuminating concept built around one of the instrumental features of human nature. Ideally, belief is built on rational thinking, aspirations, mystery, divinity, and people's culture. As such, people may believe in weird or superstitious things. Belief provides an explanation of significant issues without the requirement for proof. In a world of harsh surrealism and turmoil, it provides a simple answer to life's complexity, as well as a source of purpose and hope. Several themes from the lecture readings can be connected with the theme of belief.
First, a belief fueled revolutions and drastic social changes in history. A case in point, the Chinese revolutionaries Sun Yat-Sen and Mao Zedong lived during an era where China was still a barbaric nation after the collapse of many dynasties in the past. Sun Yat-Sen started his revolution in the early 20th century when many countries were still evolving and developing their political arenas, establishing governments and legislation.. Sun worked with his companions after the fall of the Qing Dynasty to reestablish law and order in China. A physician believed that China could rise from the ashes and join the rest of the world into the new era of politics. He was propelled by the desire to establish a modernized and nationalist government for the people. However, after his death, his predecessor did not fit well into his leadership shoes, and years afterward, China became unstable and almost fell into the hands of the Japanese.
