Patient education plays a major role in healthcare. According to Paterick, Patel, Tajik, and Chandrasekaran (2017), patient education improves health literacy among patients and allows them to be more involved in self-care. As a result, positive patient outcomes have been realized especially when it comes to managing conditions associated with lifestyle. An interview with an older patient about their experiences with patient education provided me with an insight into how patient education affects patient outcomes as well as the overall healthcare system.
Patient Responses
I interviewed an older friend, Mrs. Keoni, who lives next door with her daughter and granddaughter. She has had osteoarthritis for many years and was recently discharged from hospital following a knee replacement surgery. The first question I asked her was whether she received instructions on how to take care of herself after the surgery. In response, she said that her physician had told her what she needed to do to manage the pain, other than taking medication. For instance, she was told to move around a bit and also take breaks in between activities. She found this to be helpful information as it helped her deal with the pain while at home.
The second question was whether she was advised on her medication, diet, and exercise. In response, she indicated that a team of healthcare providers, including a nurse, a nutritionist, and a physical therapist advised her on how to take her medication, plan her meals, and engage in regular exercise, respectively. She also mentioned that the pharmacist clearly labeled her medication and included clear instructions on the packages about dosages. Since the communication from each member of her healthcare team was clear, she was able to follow their instructions easily.
The third question was whether she had any support system at home to assist her in her recovery. She revealed that her daughter and granddaughter were her main caregivers and support system and they were often, understandably, overwhelmed by this responsibility. In addition to her family, a physical therapist came to her house three times a week to help her with physical therapy.
The fourth question was whether she felt that the patient education and her interaction with the healthcare team were sensitive to her culture. She is a Native Hawaiian and she indicated that in her culture, people establish a connection by asking questions such as lineage, family background, etc. Unfortunately, she responded that most of the healthcare team members were not responsive to her questions and she was unable to make a connection with them. In a way, she felt that they did not understand where she was coming from and there was no appreciation of her cult...
