Table 1. Pros and Cons of Using Electronic Health Records (EHRs)
Pros

Cons

Improved knowledge of the patient’s condition (Zanaboni et al., 2020).

EHRs promote easy accessibility to the information about the patient’s condition. This gives the health providers and the patients sufficient knowledge about the history and progression of the disease. Health providers can easily analyze a systematic set of data while the patients can have a better correlation of the course of their disease with the impact of the treatment regimen (Zanaboni et al., 2020).

High maintenance

EHRs must be heavily guarded by cybersecurity as these contain confidential information about the patients that may be used against them or these may even harm the patients. Due to this, the institution must hire a skilled information technologist partnered with the latest and most secure software (Ronquillo et al., 2018).

Computerized physician orders entry (CPOE) reduces the rate of medical errors (Palabindala et al., 2016).

CPOE eliminates the need to decipher the poor penmanship of some physicians. The difficulty in reading increases the risk of providing the incorrect drugs for the patient (Palabindala et al., 2016).

High cost

EHRs require constant guarding via the information technologists, constant upgrading of the software, and multiple maintenances of the devices (Cantor & Thorpe, 2018).

The clinical decision support (CDS) tool supports the physician’s decision-making process (Rudin et al., 2020).

The CDS updates the information about the patient and the drug daily and helps in analyzing the presence of major drug-to-drug interactions and prevents the physicians from prescribing drugs from which the patient has possible allergies (Rudin et al., 2020).

Overdependence on technology

Colicchio et al. (2019) explained that health providers might be unintentionally overdependent on technology because it la...
