Personal Philosophy of Nursing
Philosophy is a science that involves wisdom and reasoning in efforts that lies behind what is accepted as a fact or reality. Its application of particular concepts and principles embraces knowledge in addressing ideas logically. Philosophies of nursing care based on values and concepts that are the bases of thinking and acting (Butts & Rich, 2013). I believe that the purpose of nursing philosophies is to place ideas into their respective theories that analyze the cause rather than the resultant effects. Also, I believe that when philosophical reason is applied in nursing practice, all parties receive their share as well as good knowledge. My personal philosophy as a nurse began when I tried to understand how we define the nursing profession in school and what it meant for me as a nurse. The purpose of this paper is to state my nursing philosophy and the key driving concepts, application of my philosophy in nursing practice and some of the strengths and challenges in my profession as a nurse.
My philosophy of nursing is deeply based on Henderson’s and Watson’s theory of nursing. This theory stresses the need to have insights on the treatment of patients with respect and dignity that they deserve. One of the goals of nursing is to help patients recover and regain back their health (Chitty & Black, 2007). Therefore my core value as a nurse is to show compassion at my level best for the benefit of the patient at a personal level. This reminds that the reason why I decided to pursue nursing was to help others heal and seize pain. The other core values of my philosophy as a nurse is honesty, hard work and mutual collaboration with others to reach a common target.
In practicing my nursing career, I have encountered many patients who suffer from both physical, emotional and psychological pain. Through my interaction with them, I realized that my conversations helped them recover fast. I could share with them every time during my shifts until they could finally recover from their ailments. I finally realized that they did not only recover from their diseases but also recovered mentally. I could receive messages on my email of how well and good life has been since then. This makes me love my career and develop a sense of satisfaction from the patient. Therefore, caring for patients creates a platform for spiritual interaction which facilitates their healing process (Butts & Rich, 2013). This realization made it clear to me that nursing involves more than administering health care and medication.
The other principle that guides me in my nursing philosophy is collaboration for a common gain. This principle lies more on the side of my relationship with my colleagues than patients. Research has been conducted on issues of discrimination based on micro-sociolog...
