According to Knowles, teaching adult learners is "the art and science of helping adults learn" (p.43) 1980). We know adults have a more global perspective about life based upon life experience. They are self-directed and have their own learning style; they learn by building newfound knowledge on top of their life's experiences. Equally important, adult learners have responsibilities outside of the learning environment. As such, they prioritize their time to meet their many obligations, including their role as an adult learner. Developing curriculum can be challenging especially when you have learners (students) from multiple generations in the same classroom.
Standards in nursing education have emerged as a driving force in the development of context-based nursing curriculum. Linking educational, accreditation, and clinical standards of practice into curriculum content presents a challenge. This is especially important for curriculum that focuses on a clinical specialty, licensure, or determines the future of the program's existence. Because of the increasing need for academic programs or clinical practice settings to achieve accreditation, standards are frequently used to establish a program's objectives. The desired end result (outcome) of the objectives can be set as either the highest or the minimal expectation to benchmark the learners' progress. For example, first-time NCLEX test takers must achieve ≥ 75% to receive their RN license. Standard-based objectives can also be used to predict success or failure and identify areas of curriculum improvement. Example: NCLEX test results determine if remediation is necessary for repeated failures).
To promote excellence, the quality of the curriculum content must be continually improved as standards change to stay current with societal and health care trends, issues, and research findings (evidence-based practices).

Consider the different learning styles (Links to an external site.) of adult learners when designing your curriculum. This is especially important when you reach the point of having to select teaching and learning strategies to fit the various generations of students in your setting.
Review the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) standards (Links to an external site.) for nursing education at the BSN and MSN level.
Review The Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education (Links to an external site.) from the National League of Nursing (NLN). These incorporate specific indicators for a nursing curriculum for students, faculty, curriculum content, continuous quality improvement, teaching and learning evaluation strategies, resources, innovation, educational research, environment, and leadership.

To ensure that Adult Learning Theory complies with current standards, an individual has to practice more of adult learner experiences. Adult learner experience is whereby learners have matured and had vastly experienced in their lives and have had enough time to outgrow some activities. They are also advanced in age with cultivated life experience and knowledge accumulated all though. Adult Learning Theory hence will encompass individuals with different skills, from different backgrounds and experiences.
