The goal of the Session Long Project is to identify and evaluate the ethical principles used in resolving ethical dilemmas, and to apply the principles to specific ethical issues that may have professional, sociological, economic, legal or political implications.
Often times a patient needs a lot of resources prior to being discharged from the hospital. Some organizations use discharge planners or case managers to aid in acquiring these resources. The topic of this SLP is about Jenna, a young woman who could not be discharged home until the issue of resources to care for her was resolved. This story demonstrates that resource allocation decision making is inherently complex, a process that is dynamic, multidimensional, and iterative. After reading the article, "The relational nature of case manager resource allocation decision making: An illustrated case" by Fraser, Estabrooks, and Strang and doing additional research, please respond to the questions listed below:
1.Provide a brief summary of Jenna's case. What was her medical condition? What was her prognosis? Why was it important for her to go home? Did she get to go home? If so, how did that impact her recovery?
2.What were the resources that Jenna needed to go home? What barriers did her case manager encounter in acquiring these resources?
3.Discuss the theory of relational ethics as it applies to this case. What is it? How does it impact the allocation of resources? Think about your own discipline of study, how does this theory apply to acquiring scare resources? Provide an example.
4.Based on what you have read about this case and resource allocation, do you agree with the statement "that resource allocation decision making is inherently complex, a process that is dynamic, multidimensional, and iterative"? Summary of Jenna's Case
The case of Jenna provides a highlight into the manner in which resources need to be allocated and decisions in complex situations. The information used in this study is retrieved from Fraser et al. (2010). The case manager in this scenario exemplifies an intricate relational experience in balancing the interests of a family and that of a patient's condition in the provision of reports from the care team and physician within the hospital and home setting (Fraser, Estabrooks, Allen, & Strang, 2010). In as much as the condition of Jenna was not aggravated before prognosis, the outcomes of her situation depict the tasks required in relational ethics, resource allocation and decision-making approaches for the managers.
The case manager in this situation is caught up in a mix of determining the existing balance and the emerging issues in the case. Jenna's release from hospital was done after a period of 11 months in hospital following the prognosis. It is, however, essential to determine that a home-based care approach seemed to be different from the care provided in the hospital in relation to the resources that were required in terms of time, tolerance, funding and commitment (Fraser, et al., 2010). The resources required in this case were somehow limited, a factor that resulted in more conflicting issues that would compromise the case managers ethical dilemma. This paper, therefore, depicts the condition of Jenna and determines the manner in which complex, multi-dimensional, and iterative resources need to be allocated including the decision making process.
Jenna's Medical Condition and Prognosis
 Jenna's condition was considered as paraplegic, an ailment that was contracted when this 12 year-old patients attempted to repair her scoliosis.
