Organization overview
American Nurses Association (ANA) is a not for profit federation of affiliated state health organization that represents 4 million registered nurses nationally. The primary objective of the association is to continuously represent the interests of the 4 million registered nurses through sharing information and collaborating with other entities representing its members to ensure it finds lasting solutions to issues that face the nursing profession, regardless of specialty. An eligible person can become a member through constituent and state nurses’ associations, direct membership in ANA, and through our partnership specialty nursing and affiliate organizations. A person can become a member either through the state affiliates, e-membership or member only registration program. Each of these membership options has different provisions and benefits, and it is advised that any new member considers and chooses the most befitting option for himself/herself.
Members of any state affiliate groups are automatically members of the ANA. Since the registration is at the state level, the membership fees and discounts differ. For example, in California, ANA membership has a monthly subscription fee of $15 or $174 per year CITATION ANA192 \l 1033 (ANA California, 2019). On the other hand, the cost of ANA membership in Georgia state-only membership is $15.92 per month or $185 per year, and GNA/ANA membership is $325.00 annually or $27.59/month with discounts for new graduates, RNs in school etc. CITATION Geo19 \l 1033 (Georgia Nurses Association , 2019). Thus, each state affiliate organization determines and enforces its own membership terms and fixes the fees. At the moment, the membership structure cannot be comprehensively defined, but it has different discount programs for eligible persons to register.
Benefits of having ANA membership
ANA has programs that help its members to advance their careers. A good career advancement trajectory requires several accreditations and certification. For some of these certifications, being an ANA member, you are eligible for discounts. For example, an ANA member gets a $125 on ANCC initial certification and $100 on ANCC certification renewal CITATION ANA19 \l 1033 (ANA, 2019). These certifications and renewals are very important in seeking new positions.
