The prevalence of type 2 diabetes among the Hispanic population in my community is higher than the national average. This prevalence is caused by socio-cultural factors, including low income and reduced access to education and healthcare. Studies show that Hispanic Americans have lower socioeconomic status than non-Hispanic Americans (Chande et al., 2020). They are subjected to barriers that reduce their ability to access quality healthcare. This low socioeconomic status's primary cause is low education attainment, reduced family income, insufficient capacity to accumulate resources, and unfavorable occupational characteristic. Studies show that close to Hispanic Americans live in poverty compared to non-Hispanic whites, who occupy about 7% of the population with low socioeconomic standards (Carpenter et al.,2019). About 52% of the Hispanic population has attained a high school Diploma compared to approximately 8% white Americans with the same level of education (Aguayo‐Mazzucato et al., 2019).
Due to low educational attainment in this community, it is safe to note that the Hispanic population is less likely to secure executive positions in the workplace. These characteristics make it hard for Hispanics to access quality health care. This population is less likely to get insurance cover due to low income and unavailability of relevant information caused by the language barrier (Chande et al., 2020). Insufficient education poses a challenge to the Hispanic population as the individuals attempt to navigate the complex healthcare delivery. They cannot initiate communication with healthcare providers or clearly understand the provided instructions.
As immigrants, the Hispanic population's status, language barrier, and acculturation degree affect their healthcare access and insurance cover. Genetic vulnerability to obesity and increased insulin resistance has also been associated with type 2 diabetes in this community. Research indicates that Hispanic have genes that increase their chance of developing type 2 diabetes (Chande et al., 2020). Besides, Hispanics have increased obesity rates and tend to be less physically active.
