Childhood obesity has become a critical health problem in the country and puts children and young people at risk of poor health. Additionally, the prevalence of obesity among young children is on the rise and affected children from two to nineteen years old. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the widespread prevalence of obesity is about 18.5%, affecting approximately 13.7 million young people (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). Most importantly, childhood obesity is common in certain communities such as Hispanics, non-Hispanic blacks, and non-Hispanic Asians.
Childhood obesity is a critical problem because it can cause other health problems related to childhood obesity, including high blood pressure and diabetes, and cause depression and poor self-esteem. Besides, there is a progressive rise in cases of obesity and other obesity-related conditions. For example, it has been determined that childhood obesity is a key factor in promoting type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Besides, obesity may also contribute to lower educational attainment and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Spinellia et al., 2019). Effective interventions should be implemented to help protect young people and increase their health well-being.
The target population includes school-going children, and this would consist of young people between the age of six and twelve years. Young people within this age bracket are likely to develop obesity if they take energy-dense foods with a high concentration of fat and sugars but low vitamins and other crucial minerals.
