When a young woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, it is both distressing and unexpected. Many of the diagnosed ladies rely on their families for the provision of necessities. The article recognizes the role played by the relatives, though, the range and depth of the family’s response to such conditions has not been fully explored. It is argued that the fundamental influence the family members possess is providing the affected victim with protection buffer. The relatives are sometimes left with distress and unmet needs. After the diagnosis, the family members experience numerous challenges due to their negative or positive responses to the disease progression and treatment. In addressing the knowledge gap, current studies, being undertaken in the field, investigate the resources and strengths of the relatives, while responding to the dynamic nature of family support.
Background
Breast cancer has developed into the most common type of cancer worldwide, with an eighth of women under 75 years being diagnosed. Approximately a quarter of all cases of breast cancer comprise of ladies at the age of 50 and below. The young ladies diagnosed with the illness are prone to physical and psychological effects of treatment. Thereby, the family members play a crucial role in offering assistance through both physical and mental support. Due to the impact of therapy, the illness affects the support network of the patient, creating mental and physical stress, leaving the network in need of direction and support for themselves (Coyne, Wollin, & Creedy, 2012).
One of the important influences on the family reaction to the illness and communication - is an appraisal of the illness. Once the family members see a positive aspect of the illness, they work hand in hand to overcome the difficulty (Coyne, Wollin, & Creedy, 2012). The application of a coping structure and family trauma offers the means of analyzing the family as a team of people. Some of the research questions include:
What are the resources and strengths used by the family members and young women during breast cancer treatment?
What are the attributes of a family influencing the resources and strengths used during breast cancer treatment?
Is there any change in resources and strengths during maintenance and active treatment?
Methods
The approach adopted by the study is a mixed two-phased process, examining the levels and types of resources and strengths utilized by the relatives of affected ladies. The collection of qualitative data on the affiliates of the family support and strength perspectives was conducted through personal interviews. Besides, two phases were used in the measurement of the levels and types of resources and strengths used by the family in the analysis of Quantitative data. Phase 1 was undertaken during treatment of breast cancer, while phase 2 was conducted after treatment.
