What is "emotional contagion" and what is its trigger point?
Emotional contagion is a term used to describe the tendency of one's emotions to change and adapt to the emotional setting of their surrounding (Smith, 2016). The trigger point for emotional contagion is mimicking other people’s emotional expressions like happiness and frowning. When one encounters an environment with emotions such as sadness or happiness, one is bound to adopt those emotions.
How can emotions affect our work and home life?
Emotions are infectious and can impact a person’s life both at work and at home. Negative emotions impact one's ability to make honest decisions that are critical in workplaces and also at home. If the workplace is characterized by negative emotional contagion, it can be prone to accidents and errors (Gaines, 2021). Similarly, if one’s home is filled with positive emotions such as happiness and laughter, relationships are bound to be better. However, according to Petitta et al. (2021), anger absorbed by employees at the workplace can persist when they go home and can even cause sleep disturbances.
