The industrial revolution of the late 18th century led to the emergence of new technologies that revolutionized the manufacturing industry to a great extend. Similarly, the social and cultural aspects of the society were also transformed, later leading to the formation of organizations. It was until the 19th century that the idea of organizational studies was embraced by the early sociologists and subsequently the concept of organizational behavior was adopted. Organizational Behavior (OB) is a discipline that seeks to understand the impacts that human behavior have on an organization from an individual, group, or organizational perspective (van Knippenberg & Hogg, 2017). Human aspects play an important role in an organization, and the need to understand individuals’ or group-specific behaviors such as personality, motivation, communication, or even emotional intelligence becomes paramount to the success and the structure of an organization.
OB borrows some concepts from a wide range of disciplines and can as well be termed as multi-disciplinary. Psychology, sociology, anthropology, and even political science are the core disciplines that OB draws references and ideas from (Ivancevich et al., 1990). The most notable ideas drawn from the field of psychology include concepts such as emotional intelligence, critical thinking, learning, motivation, training (Ivancevich et al., 1990). Vital concepts of organizational behavior like organizational change, organizational culture, communication, conflicts, and conflict resolutions are heavily linked with sociology. Politics and powers have become central in an organizational setting in the contemporary era, and OB draws important concepts from the political science discipline. The human aspects, being a vital component of an organization, makes it necessary for organizations to explore the people side of an organization; thus anthropology plays a vital role (Tian et al., 2018). Besides, OB can be interpreted from three distinct perspectives: individual, group, and organization, necessitating drawing concepts from multiple disciplines to effectively understand the OB principles.
