Piaget's theory of cognitive development is a theory that deals with the nature and development of human intelligence (Meadows, 2017). It suggests that intelligence changes as children grow. Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development refers to a cognitive development theory that views human development as a socially mediated process where children acquire their cultural values, believes, and problem-solving abilities through social interaction with more skilled or experienced society members (Semmar & Al-Thani, 2015).
The three factors that can affect children's cognitive abilities include nutrition, environment, and maternal-child interactions (Ford & Stein, 2016). First, poor nutrition causes children to have less energy and less interest in learning, thus, affecting their cognitive development (Ford & Stein, 2016). Second, exposure to environmental toxins or pollutants can cause cognitive dysfunction in children. Finally, poor maternal-child interaction leads to poor emotional, mental, and behavioral outcomes.
