The intelligence community comprises a group of organizations and agencies that often work together and separately to engage in various activities to protect the interests of the United States and the facilitation of foreign relations. The consensus is that there are six steps involved in the intelligence cycle. They are planning and direction, collection, processing, exploitation, analysis and production, dissemination, and evaluation (Stone & Joel, 2013, p. 6). This cycle addresses the way intelligence is collected, analyzed, and used. Intelligence is beneficial. However, the big question here is in its mode of analysis and use. Intelligence is like a double-edged sword; it cuts both ways. Various debates have been carried out on how to use intelligence when to use it, and the reason behind its usage. Finding the correct answers to this requires one to understand the ability and limitations of intelligence.
The collection of intelligence has enabled the nation to get early warnings of impending threats and opportunities (Stone & Joel, 2013, p. 32). The terrorists and other militant groups' activities have been thwarted on numerous occasions thanks to actionable intelligence. Over the past two decades, terrorist figures have been either arrested or killed in military strikes. The increased scrutiny overseas and locally has led to the shutting down of cells. When talking about opportunities, it is terms of luring potential defectors, gaining intelligence from spies about foreign countries, and leveraging intelligence to force foreign powers to cede their stance on various issues.
