The measuring of intelligence has evolved with time as researchers continuously research the best methods to measure intelligence accurately. The first modern intelligence test is known as the Binote-Simone intelligence test and was published in 1905, which mainly focused on measuring a child's intelligence. However, in 1935 David Wechsler published the first-ever intelligence test exclusively designed for the adult population; and later extended it to the younger population (Drozdick et al., 2018). The Weschler intelligence scale has 15 subtests divided further into categories such as verbal and performance tests. This essay will discuss one of the fifteen subtests; vocabulary.
Vocabulary- This test measures an individual's intelligence through knowledge of words and the capability of verbally expressing the definition and meanings of different words. When using vocabulary subtests to measure intelligence, words are presented to an individual or even student in the form of visuals through large prints where a person names object in the picture and in an oral form where they get to define the words presented. The test measures the extent to which someone has learned, also known as semantic knowledge, as it is general information that a person has acquired. It also measures a person's understanding and comprehension of words and how well they can express these words.
Researchers have conducted considerable research to review the validity of vocabulary as a test for intelligence. Findings suggest that vocabulary subtest is a valid method to measure a person's general intelligence.
