Logical Fallacy Group Activity
We have been discussing persuasive strategies and how writers find ways to reach their audience. Sometimes sources unfairly present information, so it is especially important that we are able to identify these abuses prior to repeating those deceptions.
Materials: Either laptops with software capable of editing an image or poster and markers.
Directions: Invent a product, define the audience, and then create an advertisement for the product. The product does not really matter, but the advertisement will be important. Your message must employ at least 4 different logical fallacies we have discussed so far (Faulty Use of Authority is not allowed given its ease). You will be given the remainder of this class to quickly craft your script/message and overall plan. Next class session you will be given some time to complete the project, but most or all groups will present at the end of class. Each group must submit logical fallacies used and the examples by Friday. Accordingly, students will need to explore their reasoning why the fallacy selected meets the definition
logical fallacy examples: Ad baculum, argumentum,complex question, conspiracy theory, stacking the deck.

In advertising and marketing for a new fresh juice, the four original advertisement sentences are: “If you are looking for a fresh juice brand, do not look for any other say yes or else you will miss out on what you need”. The second is “most people now prefer healthy drinks do not be left to this opportunity, and we are here for you”. The third is “we understand sources customers and you have been have you been searching for healthy fresh juices that are available”. The fourth is “we seek to provide healthier beverage options and the juice is refreshing and natural made with less sugar content”. The four fallacies made are the fallacy ad baculum, ad populum, the complex question fallacy andthea stacking the deck (card-stacking) respectively.
The first advertisement highlights that the product is beneficial, and the best in the market in a way that forces the customers to choose, and if the ad appeals to brute force it is fallacy ad baculum (Athreya and Mouza, 116).
