Transportation is central to the economic performance of countries. The sector is responsible for a lot of output and numerous jobs. Additionally, it enables other sectors to generate supplies and distributed nationally and internationally, thus allowing for creation of new wealth through transportation (Rodrigue n.p). Major modes of transport within the industry include road, air, rail and water transport. The largest airline companies include American airlines, Delta airlines, Air France-KLM, Emirates Group, and International Airlines Group. The largest road transport companies include: DHL, UPS, FedEx, Maersk Group, and DB Schenker. The largest rail companies include: Rail Pacific, Canadian National Railway, Central Japan Railway, East Japan Railway, and MTR Hong Kong. The Largest water transport companies include: Alexander and Baldwin, American Commercial Lines, American River Transportation, Horizon Lines, and Kirby Corporation. 
The importance of the transportation sector can never be understated. Through the industry, it is possible to increase productivity. Additionally, the transport industry increases access to labor market and helps business to have access to new markets (Aggelakakis et al. 42). This can help in spurring the growth of businesses and improve the efficiency of the supply chain. The benefits of the transportation industry can be measured in terms of the contribution to the economic growth, trade facilitation, job creation, and other economies of scale.
