A while back, I worked at a busy food store with about ten employees. I was the supervisor, a position I earned after working diligently for a considerable time. The store belonged to a middle-aged couple who were generally good people. They treated their employees with decorum and embraced the aspirations of making their employees satisfied. However, there was one outstanding grievance among the employees. It revolved around the time they got to be off-duty, which they felt was inadequate. Since the food store was extremely busy, the owners allowed employees one day off every week. As a consequence, most of them began exhibiting signs of fatigue, while others seemed to lose interest in work. As a matter of fact, I had been called upon to handle situations where customers complained about poor service. Therefore, I aspired to amicably resolve the issue without creating undesirable conflicts.
That being the case, I decided to discuss the prevailing circumstances with the owners of the store and negotiate for adequate time off for the employees. When we met, I explicitly explained to them the situation and the ramifications that had resulted from the issue. I explained that if they allowed the problem to linger, the store would experience a mass exodus of employees who felt disenchanted. I let slip that the employees had shown tremendous commitment to their work before, and I was certain they would revert to being diligent if their grievance was efficiently addressed. As such, I requested the owners to allow every employee two days off weekly to allow them time to cater to their personal affairs.
