Reflection on the Experiences with Delivery Nurses and Women in OB Unit

I learned so much throughout the semester. I have a new appreciation for labor and delivery nurses. The nurses were great and provided students with many hands-on learning opportunities. I feel I saw a lot of the beginning of labor, but didn’t see the progression of labor. During my last day of clinical, I had the opportunity to see more of the progression. I was excited to observe a spinal epidural and be involved in the continuous monitoring involved after an epidural. I had the opportunity to perform a successful catheter insertion and maintain a sterile field. I was happy with the learning opportunities the last day of clinical. In addition, I am grateful for all the learning opportunities throughout the semester. I am confident with performing newborn and postpartum assessments, which was something I knew nothing about before this semester. I learned about the common medications used in the OB unit and the continuous monitoring required. I did not have the opportunity to see any complications, but I heard many stories and learned about the various complications that could occur.

The current semester has been instrumental, and I have met my expectations. The most significant impact it has had on me is that I now appreciate delivery nurses and women in labor more. The nurses I met in my field studies were friendly to all students and often supported us in learning. They were open to questions and demonstrations to ensure we understood everything.
My last day at the facility was outstanding as I got an opportunity to observe spinal epidural and aftercare. Additionally, I got a chance to fix a catheter for a patient and successfully establish and maintain a sterile field. The experience I got dealing with patients in labor has enhanced my confidence in executing newborn and postpartum assessments, procedures that I had limited knowledge about before.
I also learned about common medications used in the OB unit and the routine assessment and monitoring required. I had theory concepts regarding possible complications that might occur in the OB, information that would be useful to me if I find myself in such a situation as a practising nurse.
1.Critically analyze and demonstrate health promotion for families during preconception and childbearing. (EDUCATION)
One of the areas I enjoyed was teaching mothers. I observed and taught mothers how to swaddle their newborns on several occasions. I also taught them the significance of breastmilk on the growth and immunity of their newborn babies. Besides the opportunity to teach mothers, I interacted with nurses as they taught about postpartum self-care. My take care in this observation process was how to perform peri-care and the significance of rest in aiding the healing process. Lastly, I helped a young mother latch on to her baby, and everything went well after I demonstrated it to her.

Interacting and communicating with people from different cultures was interesting. I was more comfortable interacting with family members and helped nurses with admission enquiries about mothers' pregnancies and lifestyles. This helped me develop a strong connection with Hispanic mothers who relied on my interpretation abilities interpreting information from the nurses in Hispanic.

I spent more time on newborn assessments, with the most notable experience being seeing a baby under the bilirubin light.
