Atenolol is one of the medications used to treat newly diagnosed hypertension. It may or may not be used in combination with other hypertension medications. This drug belongs to the class of medication referred to as beta-blockers. The mode of action of beta-blockers is such that they result in a reduced heart rate. Atenolol works by blocking various neurotransmitters and brain chemicals such as epinephrine (Wajngarten & Silva, 2019). The result is a lowering of heart rate.
