A majority of the serious infections in healthcare settings are spread by the actions of individuals. In the surgical wards, the risk of the spread of diseases is high. Debris and microorganisms are likely to remain in nails, hands, and forearms. The inability to perform handwashing increases the risk of nurses transmitting germs from one patient to another (Chadwick, 2019). Patients in surgical wards are more vulnerable to healthcare-acquired infections (HCAIs). According to Haque and others (2018), a survey done in 183 healthcare facilities in the US demonstrated that 4% of the patients had at least one HCAI. Handwashing can reduce diarrheal disease-associated deaths and respiratory infections by 50% and 16% respectively (CDC, 2021).
Nursing Diagnosis:
The risk of infection as a result of poor hand hygiene. Nurses who fail to perform handwashing in surgical wards increase incidences of HCAIs.
Readiness for Learning:
The emotional readiness would be the nurses’ excitement to participate in the various handwashing sessions. Nurses working in the surgical units should demonstrate an eagerness to learn why handwashing is important. They should be willing to participate in the training sessions. For experiential readiness, the nurses should be willing to teach others about hand washing. Asking questions would allow them to learn more and hence transmit the knowledge to others.
Learning Theory to Be Utilized:
The teach-back method will be used. After every teaching session, I will be asking the nurses to state in their words what they know about handwashing. This will be an effective way of confirming that I explained in a way that they understand (Talevski et al., 2018).
Goal:
Attain high-quality care: This objective will ensure that patients receive high-quality care while in the surgical wards.
Live free from preventable diseases: HCAIs can be prevented by taking appropriate measures.
