Leadership can be conceptualized as the leader’s approach when guiding a healthcare organization’s operations towards a shared objective (Al-Sawai, 2013). Leaders are central in driving strategic thinking in a healthcare organization to enhance environmental awareness and create a culture of creative ideas and solutions. Environmental awareness lets hospital leaders know when to employ directional strategies and strategic alternatives. Directional strategies are the broadest approaches that set the basic direction of the healthcare organization by establishing the mission and vision. In addition, directional strategies specify the healthcare organization’s strategic goals and values. Strategic alternatives are the more specific strategies that offer the primary techniques to adapt to the environment and achieve the vision (Ginter et al., 2018). Moreover, strategic alternatives establish the healthcare organization’s scope and specify how the facility would maintain, expand, or reduce its scope.
