Developing a Research Question and Application of PICOT

Coursework Instructions:

Developing a Research Question

Developing a clear and pecise researh question is the first step researchers must take m order to design an effective study. Experimental studies  (spcifically those using what is called a "Randomized Control Trial" (RCT) design) are the gold standard in research. This is why clinical trials in the health or human services field use the RCT experimental study design. Experimental studies using human participants as their research subjects utilize the PICOT method to describe the research question that is being addressed in the study. PICOT stands for population, intervention, control, outcome, and time.

Population: Pregnant women between the ages of 18-35 with a history of gestational diabetes.
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and affects about 3-10% of pregnant women worldwide. GDM is associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidities, including macrosomia, pre-eclampsia, and an increased risk of cesarean section.
Intervention: A 12-week exercise program consisting of low-impact aerobics and resistance training, supervised by a certified personal trainer.
Physical activity has been shown to improve glucose metabolism and reduce the incidence of GDM. Regular exercise during pregnancy has been associated with a lower risk of GDM, better glycemic control, and improved maternal and fetal outcomes. The proposed 12-week exercise program is designed to be safe, effective, and feasible for pregnant women with GDM.
Control: The control group will receive standard care, which includes dietary counseling and glucose monitoring.
Standard care for GDM includes dietary counseling and glucose monitoring to ensure adequate glucose control and prevent maternal and fetal complications. It will serve as the control group for the study and allow for a direct comparison of the effects of the exercise program on GDM.
Outcome: The primary outcome measure will be the incidence of g...
