Question #1: What is it like for a mother to return home to their family after completing her jail/prison sentence?
The situation of returning home after incarceration is always difficult. For mothers, the challenge depends on their relationships with their families and the length of stay in prison. In this regard, if the mother maintains close ties with the family, it will be easier for them to transition from prison to civilian life (Arditti, 2014). However, they might still encounter challenges involving their expectation of the behavior of their child and the partner. If the expectations are unrealistic, they may be unable to adjust properly, creating conflict in the family (Garcia, 2016). In single mothers, the situation is more difficult because they must contend with catering to their families despite the lack of employment opportunities and low financial resources.
Question #2: What is it like for a father to return home to their family after completing his jail/prison sentence?
Like mothers returning home, fathers also face a challenge in integrating into the family. Moreover, the difficulty of returning home is usually determined by the type of relationship they had with the family during incarceration (Arditti, 2014). The situation is more difficult for fathers due to societal expectations of men that they should provide for their families. The lack of job opportunities after incarceration causes them to feel like a burden to the family (Crutchfield & Weeks, 2015). They are receiving support from their partner during such time despite their circumstances is important to reintegrate into the family and society.
