As an educator, you will develop potential solutions to classroom scenarios that address personal and social development. Including families in problem solving extends the learning beyond the classroom walls, increases transparency, and builds a community of trust between the teacher and families. Some situations are best addressed through direct communication with the family, while other situations may be handled through classwide communication, (i.e., newsletter, direct communication, email, in-person meeting/conference, etc.)
For this assignment, review the "Personal and Social Development Scenarios." Develop a paragraph of 50-100 words for each scenario, addressing the following:
Explain strategies you would use to address personal and social development issues within the scenario.
Describe strategies to collaborate with families to promote student growth and development outside of the classroom.
Discuss how you will communicate with families, including a rationale for why you chose the communication method.
Support each response with a minimum of one scholarly resource.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide.

Scenario 1
In an upcoming lesson in third grade, you will be addressing state standards related to listening and speaking (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). How would you encourage parents/guardians to support this standard outside of the classroom?
Classroom Strategies (within your own instruction at school)

Introduce a game that allows students to take turns, with one student having an opportunity to talk. The teacher starts the game by asking and answering a random question (Bordalba & Garreta, 2019). He then calls on one student to participate. The student asks, answers, and calls on another student all this time while exercising good values and manners such as saying thank you, I am sorry, please, may I, and so on.

Collaboration Strategies (with parents)

Family collaboration where parents are encouraged to engage their children further is effective. The teacher sets the rules of the language and deliberately allows students to work together. This activity, aside from equipping children with turn-taking skills and good manners, reinforces collaboration, teamwork, good listening, and humility.

Method of Communication

Phone, email, and parent newsletter serves the purpose. It keeps parents updated with progress and emphasizes lessons outside the classroom setting (Burns, 2016).

Scenario 2
James, an African American student, is very successful in your class and has been on the honor roll for the past three quarters. His family is concerned with his abilities to socialize with peers of various cultural backgrounds. How can you support the families in your classroom in embracing cultural identity’s role in a student’s personal and social development?
Classroom Strategies (within your own instruction at school)

A culturally responsive curriculum allows students to know each other just like teachers know each other. Games, for example, enable children to break cultural barriers (Conus & Fahrni, n.d.).

Collaboration Strategies (with parents)

Host a school event where students tag along with their parents (Ginsberg, 2011). Different cultures expand children’s perspectives about cultural diversity and allow them to embrace each other even beyond the classroom.
