Article Critique Instructions:

Students will prepare six comment-and-critique papers on the reading assignments and bring papers to class for discussion. Papers should be 2-3 double spaced pages and should analyze critically one major issue in a reading assignment, one you find thought-provoking or problematical. Possible approaches:
1) Develop a logical and/or empirical critique of the arguments you analyze (e.g., Does the evidence support the arguments?)
2) Compare material in readings with other theory/research material presented in seminar sessions;
3) Compare and contrast material in one reading assignment with that in another; or
4) Use material in the reading assignment to assess other research or data you know well (including your own). The point of the papers is for you to demonstrate that you've thought through and creatively analyzed one major issue in the reading assignment. (Avoid just summarizing and develop your insights).

Several sociocultural and historical events have influenced African American education and literacies. African American literacies refer to the idea that African American social practices, situations, and cultural identities impact how this discourse group makes sense of the world and asserts their sociopolitical claims in official and informal settings. Early scholarly thought regarding Black language and culture reflected the prevalent biases of the period since Americans of African origin had been enslaved and disadvantaged within American society (Lee & Slaughter-Defoe, 1995). 
Race is still poorly conceptualized concerning mathematics participation and learning in research, policy, and practice. For African-American students to participate fully in democracy, mathematics instruction must be tied to their lives and experiences. African-American children have historically had few opportunities in school to relate mathematics to their own lives and experiences (Bullock, 2019). Brown v. Board of Education best shows racial remediation in educational policy. By enabling Black students to attend the same schools as White children, desegregation seemed to address the problem of educational imbalance. However, there was little proof that these modifications would enhance the educational opportunities for Black students.
African American pupils' access to equitable mathematics education is hampered by the inability to "center" them in the learning process and to draw on their community and cultural experiences. For pupils to relate socially and psychologically to various cultural viewpoints, centricity is a perspective that places them inside the context of their cultural references.
