This article explores the school-based sexual health education interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa to assess the effectiveness in reducing sexually transmitted infections and promoting condom use. The prevalence of HIV/STIs among young adults in the sub Saharan Africa led to the inception of this program to intervene and seek effective measures to combat the disease. School-based sexual health is an effective measure that promotes an inclusive and comprehensive approach to propagating sexual health education interventions among young people.
For better understanding, the school-based health education intervention is translated as Sex education. Sex education targets young people between the age of 10 -24 years. During puberty, young people undergo enormous physical and emotional change which gives them the urge to experiment. As a result, this program acts as a bridge to ensure all young adults participate in safe and protected sexual activities to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and unplanned pregnancies. This school-based approach focuses on analyzing the school-based interventions to alleviate STIs/HIV among young adults. Through comprehensive analysis of the underlying factors and the prevailing forms of communication, participation distribution of condoms, community-based intervention, access to adolescent-friendly health centers, provision of school grants and tuition to encourage students to study and avoid risky sexual behaviors
The intervention participants employed several methods to reduce the vulnerability of young adults to STIs. These methods include; delivery of services to youth-based camps, continuous distribution of condoms to youth centers, schools, and community workshops. Furthermore, the program encourages the construction of adolescent-friendly health centers that promote prevention services such as school-based health services, grants, and offers to ensure students remain in school. The program also provides unconditional grants and cash transfers to cater to young adult needs as a form of community-based care.
