1. Discuss how and why various groups of people with American society began to challenge and criticize the nation's way of life. Were their criticisms valid? What were some of these groups, and how did they go about achieving them? What common goals did Latinos, American Indians, gay and lesbian citizens, African Americans, and women share in their quests for equal rights? How did their agendas differ? What were the differences and similarities in the tactics they used to achieve their aims? In other words, show change over time from the beginning of this course in 1865 until the 21st century.
2. Some historians have argues that the great increase in the size and power of the federal government since the Civil War is one of the dominant themes of American history. Trace the growth of the federal government since 1865, paying particular attention to its evolving involvement in world affairs and the domestic economy. Be sure to support your argument with relevant details. For example; To what extent did the Great Depression catalyze important changes in Americans' perceptions of themselves, their national identity, and the role of their government? What evidence of these shifts can you find in the politics and values of our own time? Now include the Great Depression in your response but also think of other examples besides the Great Depression.
3. Some historians have referred to the modern Civil Rights movement as the Second Reconstruction. Do you think the comparison between the first era of reconstruction (post Civil War years to the early twentieth century) and the so-called second era of the reconstruction (the 1950s to the 1970s is accurate? Compare and contrast the attempts to create a safeguard for African American civil rights in these two periods. Your answer should consist of government policies, African American strategies, and white responses.
