In the United States, the equality between men and women, especially among women with African-American origin, has long been questioned throughout history. Universal rights were only gradually given to women from 1865, during and after the U.S. Civil War. Currently, the U.S. embodies its ideas through the Declaration of Independence. This paper discusses the progress concerning equality and women’s rights among Black Americans through time.
Before the Civil War, women were regarded as slaves and became tools solely for procreation. During the Civil War, men were sent to the battlefield, leaving women their jobs. This was the start of matriarchy (Chapter 1). This forced them to mobilize women to take over their farms and businesses. Moreover, women organized a movement that helped the wounded soldiers and contrabands (Chapter 15) and the ill recover.
