Business Ethics
Final Paper Prompt - Spring 2022
You must write your paper on National Football League. Prepare and submit a memorandum to the Executive Vice President for Ethics, Social Responsibility and Governance of the National Football League.2 Address the following topics:
1. Provide a brief introduction of the organization, including its industry or line of business, and product or service.
2. This company recognizes and agrees with the Business Roundtable’s 2019 Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation and the UN Global Compact. It wants to avoid the mistakes of past companies in its industry, and truly become a stakeholder-led organization. The EVP has asked you to provide a recommendation for their approach going forward.
3. Considering the organization’s history, and its key stakeholders in the current paradigm, discuss what you believe is this organization’s responsibility to society.
o What are 1-2 ethical failures or dilemmas faced by this company in its history?
o What ethical values does this company espouse? Does it seem to live by those values?
o Identify 2-3 key stakeholders on whom the business should focus the most, other than investors/shareholders. Be specific. For example, do not just say “government”- which government (country/federal/state/local) and why.
o Which of the 3 ethical philosophical frameworks (from the textbook) shouldguide this effort, and how would this affect the direction the company takes?

o Offer two ideas of CSR initiatives that would align with the company’s business, stakeholders and philosophy. Your suggestions should be realistic, and something this company can and would actually do.
The company has to decide on a new strategy soon, so the EVP has given you a strict deadline (which is stated in Canvas) for this memo.
Other Requirements
• Your paper must be in memorandum format, addressed to the EVP of this company as noted above with a creative title in the “Re:” line.

Subject: Recommendations for the NFL’s Approach to Corporate Social Responsibility
Introduction
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL is the highest professional level of American football in the globe. Founded in 1920 as American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming to NFL, the organization includes 32 clubs. The clubs are divided into two conferences of 16 teams each. Each team is further divided into four divisions with four clubs each. NFL is the wealthiest professional sports league by revenue in the world. NFL grants each club franchise, allowing the clubs to operate in their home cities. Given NFL's major impact on society, the organization needs to utilize its power and influence for the good of society.
Ethical Failures or Dilemmas
Over the years, NFL has faced dilemmas in concussions and player safety. At the centre of the controversy is the concern that teams often allow or sometimes require players to return to the field before they heal completely from a concussion or head trauma. Concussions and head trauma have adverse long-term consequences for the players, like memory loss, cognitive impairment, and increased risk of suicide. In 2022 alone, 135 NFL players reported concussions CITATION Tuc22 \l 1033 (Bagley, 2022). Despite NFL knowing the adverse effects of concussions and head injuries, it has continued to insist that players resume matches before they heal completely. The desire to make more money through matches pushes the players to return to the field immediately instead of waiting until they are healed completely. Such players are more vulnerable to further complications that would hurt their health.
Another ethical issue NFL has faced is the challenge of disclination of the people of color in the teams. The United Nations Universal Deflation of Human Rights warns against discriminating against people based on color, race, sex, language and any other distinction CITATION Uni23 \l 1033 (United Nations, 2023). NFL has been accused of mistreating players of color. There are cases where couches have not taken action against players who have made racist remarks toward other players. Such an approach demonstrates NFL's reluctance to address discrimination and racism in their teams. People of color, especially African Americans, are in greater danger of experiencing racism in the matches, which shows the NFL's inability to address the issue. Further, there are instances where black players earn less than their white counterparts. As a respected organization, NFL should not entertain instances of racism and discrimination among the players. The body must act against players and couches with such negative behaviors to protect the team's reputation.
Furthermore, NFL players continue to face drug use and testing challenges. Doping has become a problem among NFL players. Some forms of doping, like blood doping, are challenging to detect unless continuous tests are made on the players. NFL continues to face criticism for doping less to combat the p...
