Sweatshops and Respect for Persons
Introduction
In their article titled Sweatshops and Respect for Persons, Norman Bowie and Dennis Arnold talk about the work ethics that are often ignored by established companies and large enterprises (Arnold & Bowie, 76). Throughout the article, the authors have emphasized the need to pay good money to employees and help them improve their standards of living. However, they did oppose the Kant’s conceptions of human dignity in one way or the other (Arnold & Bowie, 2003).
Part 1
Norman Bowie and Dennis Arnold believed that Kant’s conceptions of human dignity were the basis for different obligations of employers to employees. Respecting employees, according to Norman and Dennis, does not mean all of their demands should be respected. In fact, it is all about refraining from coercion, following the labor laws, providing reasonable wages to employees, and taking good care of the safety standards (Irrera, 43). Kantian ethics argue that employees are an integral part of any organization and that they should not be taken for granted, but considered a valuable asset regardless of their job nature. Forcing sweatshop workers to work for pennies did not make any sense to Kant (Irrera, 2017).
Part 2
Norman Bowie and Dennis Arnold were of the view that Kant’s theory had not shed light on the fact that giving employees too much importance could cause problems for the organization. The competition among brands is high these days, and it may not be possible for all organizations to address employee-related issues on a priority basis.
