STEP 2. Select one model/theory that resonates with your interest, identity, and experience in each of the following columns. You will assess your own development utilizing each of the models/theories you select.

STEP 3. For each theory, find at least one additional, academic reference (i.e. published in a research-oriented publication (note that there are references at the end of each section on the Florida State page).
STEP 4. After reading more about the three theories/models that you have selected, outline your responses to the following questions for each of the three models (you will incorporate these into your paper):
· Briefly describe the model.
· What are the model’s strengths? What are the model’s weaknesses? (Critique the model.)
· Using the model, how would you assess yourself in terms of your development? What evidence led you to that conclusion? (What thoughts, behaviors, experiences led you to that conclusion?)
STEP 5. Write your paper. In your paper, which should total approximately 6 pages in APA format (not including the separate title page and references pages), address the following:
1. An introduction that explains that you will introduce three student development models and apply them to your college experience. Identify the models and explain that you will assess your current state or stage of development as well as ways to further develop in college.
2. Three sections – one for each model/theory – that address:
a. An introduction to the model/theory used.
b. Your critique of the model/theory.
c. Your self-application of the model/theory.
3. An analysis wherein you articulate what your future development in each model will entail and identify concrete action steps that you can take in order to develop during your sophomore year and beyond. (What resources and experiences will you seek out in order to maximize your development?)
4. A brief conclusion that restates your developmental goals for the remainder of college and summarizes the actions you will take to accomplish them.
Student development involves the manner that a student grows and also increases their developmental capabilities due to being enrolled in a higher education institution. The student development theory helps educators in better understanding, supporting and serving students. Development can involve change which can be positive or negative, growth and development (Abes, 2016). It is essential for all relevant stakeholders involved in the development process of the student, to apply caution when referring to student development theories. Students are people while the theory acts only as a guideline. It is, therefore, not applicable to every student in every situation to have similar experiences. Being aware of the use of labels and avoiding theory to manipulate students is prohibited. The paper will analyze the development of self-identity model, moral development and also assess the self-authorship and transitions development models. The paper will also critique these models and also provide a summary of their importance and how they can be utilized in my future career as an educator.
This includes emotional maturity which is highlighted by the capacity of a person to identify and express emotions appropriately. The self-identity development model also includes the ability of the student to demonstrate a pattern of positive coping responses towards stressful situations. Since emotional maturity needs the ability to comprehend and reflect upon oneself, this is related to the parallel development of self-identity and self-esteem (McLean, & Syed, 2014). Self-identity development, therefore, involves the process of positively improving the identifying characteristics, abilities, and qualities of the person. This assists them in effectively defining themselves.
Erickson’s stages of psychosocial development theory can be utilized here. He indicated that youths must evolve two life crises during their adolescent phase. This theory of human development focuses on the entire lifespan of the individual, and the term crisis is used to describe a series of internal conflicts associated with the developmental stages (Abes, 2016). Erickson’s theory highlighted that the manner that a person resolves the crisis will determine their future development and personal identity.
This theory is highly useful since it comprehensively defines the process of determining the identity of a person as a natural process whereby the student experiments with various personalities and experience the multiple outcomes of their experiments (McLean, & Syed, 2014). This, therefore, enables them to determine who they are and how they want others to perceive them.
From the analysis of this theory as a student, understanding my personal beliefs and values will be essential here. Development of a positive value system would be helpful in actively exploring various identities and how these experiences can be used (Abes, 2016). These life lessons can be useful in advising other individuals concerning the best ways of comprehending their actions, ideas and also beliefs and how all these elements affect others.
Morality is the manner that people choose to live their lives through following a set of rules that govern their choices concerning right and wrong. As a student’s cognitive, emotional and social development continuously matures their comprehension of morality increases and their character becomes more closely aligned with their beliefs and values (Vozzola, 2014).
