Ocean Desertification: Reduction Of Oceanic Biomass

Term Paper Instructions:

Global Societal Problem, Argument and Solution
Prepare: The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list: adult illiteracy, funding for General Education vs STEM in primary and secondary schools, minimum wage, oceans desertification, overcoming the digital divide, refugee (escaping persecution, war, or death) crises, species extinctions (modern), tax havens, Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), universal statement of human rights (pick one), airport security, or wealth disparity. Review this GEN499 Sample Final PaperPreview the document Guide for additional guidance on the expectations of this assignment.
Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solution(s) to the problem.

Write: This Final Argumentative Essay will present research relating the critical thinker to the modern, globalized world. In this assignment, you need to address the following items in separate sections with new headings for each:
Identify the global societal problem within the introductory paragraph and conclude with a thesis statement that states your proposed solution(s) to the problem. For guidance on how to construct a good introduction paragraph, please review the Introduction Paragraph Guideline (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. from the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
Describe background information on how that problem developed or came into existence. Show why this is a societal problem, and provide perspectives from multiple disciplines or populations so that you fully represent what different parts of society have to say about this issue.
Construct an argument supporting your proposed solution(s). Be sure to consider multiple disciplines or populations so that your solution shows that multiple parts of society will benefit from this solution. Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
Interpret statistical data from at least three, peer-reviewed scholarly sources. Do this by discussing the validity, reliability, and any biases; identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these sources; and pointing out limitations of current research and attempting to indicate areas for future research. You may even use visual representations such as graphs or charts to explain statistics from sources. Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from your solution. Be sure to provide at least one positive ethical outcome as well as at least one negative ethical outcome that could result from your solution, and explain at least two ethical issues related to each of those outcomes. It's important to consider all of society.
Develop a conclusion as the last paragraph(s) of the essay, starting with rephrasing your thesis statement and then presenting the major points of the topic and how they support your argument. OCEAN DESERTIFICATION Name: Institution: Course Code: Date: Introduction Oceans are the biggest natural resource in the world which is habitat to 5-10 billion tons of biomass CITATION Bri02 \l 1033 (Groombridge & Jenkins, 2002). The sustainability of the oceans has deteriorated greatly in the last century, and the trend is still continuing. Human activities have posed a threat to the sustainability of the oceans through pollution and unsustainable exploitation of this resource. The result is ocean desertification which can be defined as; the continued reduction of oceanic biomass due to pollution and unsustainable human activities on land and in the oceans. Human activities on land and in the oceans have a direct and or indirect impact on the marine ecological balance. These activities reduce the amount of oxygen in the oceans, less sunlight penetration and changes in the chemical composition of the oceans leading to the death of marine life. These effects are continually tipping the ecological balance to irreversible lengths which result in desertification. When sunlight and oxygen levels plummet, and sunlight penetration to ocean floor reduces, less planktons grow, and the entire food chain in the ocean is affected. Humans are also part of this food chain, and in the recent past, fishing has become harder because of the culmination of the factors that threaten marine life. Currently, the ocean desertification trend can be reversed by human intervention, but it might be irreversible in the near future. Background of the problem Since the industrial revolution, human activities have affected the natural balanced cycle of Mother Nature. Our species has threatened our biodiversity and led to the extinction of many species, some even before they are discovered. The oceans, which is our biggest natural resource, has been heavily impacted by our activities. Most of ocean desertification factors can be traced to land activities. For example, most of the plastic used for packaging finds its way to the oceans and adds to the factors that prevent sunlight penetration to the seabed. In 2010 alone, it is estimated that 4.8 million tons to 12 million tons of plastic entered the ocean CITATION Jam151 \l 1033 (Jambeck, et al., 2015). This study sought to assess the influx of plastic into our oceans. Plastic is less dense than water and floats which leads to less sunlight penetration. The bigger plastic debris also breaks down to microplastic which further affects the growth of planktons. The great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch has over 79,000 metric tons of plasticCITATION LLe18 \l 1033 (Lebreton, et al., 2018). This study was carried out to assess the extent of plastic accumulation in the Gyres. This is just one of the 5 gyres in our oceans today, and the statistics showing the gravity of the problem are startling. Gyres are natural marine collection points which are formed by the flow of ocean currents. It is also estimated that the amount of plastics in our oceans will double in the next decade CITATION Ang15 \l 1033 (Chen, 2015), which is a very unsettling prediction. The plastics industry has been increasing continually in the last five decades, and very little of it is recycled or reused. Therefore, the plastic industry has had a di...
