In new employee nurses at Virginia Hospital Center, how effective is providing training around hand washing on increasing the rate of hand washing in comparison with new employee nurses who received a pamphlet and no training.
Introduction
Hand washing is necessary in reducing cross-contamination, and while health practitioners are expected to follow proper hand hygiene practices, this is not always the case. Training new nurses on hand hygiene is potentially effective in changing their behavior on hand washing practices. Reducing transmission of infections is a priority for hospitals and when the nurses pay attention to hand washing they are more likely to comply with hygiene practices and this reduces infection and transmission rates. Hand hygiene is a cost effective strategy to prevent hospital acquired infections, and since nurses spend more time with the patients compared to other health practitioners their compliance with hand hygiene guidelines affect infection and disease transmission in clinical settings (Avsar, Kasikci & Yagci, 2012).
