What does the project imply are the causes of the Irish poverty he deplores? Are there possible causes he has omitted? If so, what are they?
A Modest Proposal is a satirical piece written by Jonathan Swift in 1729 in response to the heartless and negligence directed towards the poor in Ireland. In his piece, Swift offered a fair, easy as well as cheap solution to the issue of poverty in the country. His use of economic reasoning, as well as statistical proof further, enriches his satirical approach because his solution is clearly not viable.
The English and Irish landowners are the ones who are consistently killing and causing poverty. Swift believes that the latter and the former are responsible for the misery and desperate condition of the low-income families. The landowners have made it hard for the poor to grow to the point that they can support their families.
Negligence by the people in authority is also another cause of poverty. The individuals in power have also ignored the plight of the poor and have overlooked the situation in the country. The authority has ignored any wise counsel that has been directed at them with the consequence being the worsening of the already deplorable condition.
Upon further analysis of the Swift’s piece, one realizes that there are other reasons that he might have left out. Some of the reasons include:
