As stated in the Constitution of the People’s of China, the President must strictly be a Chinese citizen who has reached the age of forty-five with full electoral rights. The NPC (The National People's Congress of People's Republic of China), China’s highest state body, elects the president, and can also remove the president, as well as other state officials from office. Removals and elections are decided by a majority vote (Constitution of the People's Republic of China, Articles 62, 63). The NPC amends the constitution and oversees its enforcement, and also enacts and amends basic laws governing state organs, civil affairs, and criminal offences. Further, the NPC elects and appoints members to central state organs, including the chairman, secretary-general, vice chairmen, and other members of the NPC standing.
As per the Law of the NPC, the NPC Presidium nominates the nominator of president. However, in practice, the ruling Communist Party of China secures the Presidential post for its present General Secretary. The president, like all state officers, is elected by the NPC from a one name ballot. If there is a vacancy in the office of the President, the Vice-President assumes the position of the President. If there is a vacancy in both the President and Vice-President Office, the Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee assumes the Presidential post until the NPC elects their preferred Vice-President and President (Constitution of the People's Republic of China, Article 84.) Before March 2018, the Vice-President and President were only allowed two consecutive terms....
