Though most parents love their children immeasurably and wouldn't trade their experience of parenting for anything else, the reality of parenting can be a shock, and many new parents find themselves unprepared for a new and incredibly needy person in their lives. Take a look at the following article, “All Joy and No Fun (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..” Then, let's talk about some of the challenges parenting presents in the Family Life Cycle.
Talk with three parents. Try to find a variety of people – someone whose first child is 20 and another whose first child is two, for example. Ask the following questions of each:
What change was the least expected after your first baby was born; what surprised you the most?
How did your communication with your partner and others change after the baby was born?
If you were in a committed relationship at the time, how did the baby's arrival affect the romantic relationship?
After you have conducted your interviews, post a summary to share with your peers. Be sure to discuss each question that was asked in the interviews. Then, discuss how the information you gathered from the parents compares with this chapter’s discussion of the impact of children on committed relationships.
In responses to peers, discuss whether similar or different themes emerged from your interviews or personal experiences.
