The purpose of the talk is to: inform the audience and persuade them to consider sleep as a therapy. Foster states to the audience that they will spend 36% of their lives sleeping. He further breaks this down by noting that an individual who lives up to 90 years, for example, has about 32 years of sleep.
It is thus obvious that if we spend such a substantial amount of time sleeping, then it is definitely an important part of life, yet we think it is not and discard it. The speech notes three key reasons why we need sleep: one, sleep restores the body’s metabolic processes. Many genes responsible for metabolic activities are active only when we sleep, for that matter, sleep aids in metabolism (Farquhar, M., 1056).
