This is an opportunity for you to write an ethnographic paper that takes a critical look at global artists, music genres, and/or fandom. Your research must include fieldwork, e.g., interviews with musicians and their fans, or draw from current periodical literature. In this paper, you must put the musical practices you write about in the context of the history and the issues that we have covered in this course. Those issues include globalization, nationalism, cultural appropriation, cosmopolitanism, musical protest, cultural authenticity, and politics of identity (race/ethnicity, nationality, diaspora, class, gender/sexuality, age, and more). 
You must reference substantially at least 3 ACADEMIC SOURCES, which include at least ONE source from the course reading. For academic sources, start with jstor or project muse, or books published by university presses from the Main/Music Library. You may use additional online media such as YouTube, Rolling Stone, and any other sources of world music culture you can think of - these can be part of the additional sources needed as well as citing information presented in lectures and discussion sections if you find it pertinent to your paper, however, these additional sources will not count as academic sources. 
You must include a References list (Bibliography) at the end of your paper. Your paper must have a clear topic and thesis statement. Your paper must contain descriptive, cultural, historical detail. Your paper must also contain cogent, thoughtful analysis. If you choose to write about music or musicians that are covered specifically in the lectures, readings or sections, you must be sure to go beyond the details presented in the course. Make sure to give your paper a sensible title, keep your writing focused, support yourself with examples, and communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. Writing essentials like spelling, grammar, organization and style are of utmost importance.

Growth of the Korean Hip Hop
Music provides the society with a form of entertainment and a platform they are able to use to let themselves loose from the hustles and bustles of their everyday lives. Across the various musical genres musicians have been able to capture the desires and wishes of almost all the people in the society. Musicians have been able to use music to express various social issues and also to highlight the current trends happening around the world. Musical fandom has become a major aspect of the industry with very passionate fans who relate to each and every song from their favorite musicians. Fandom has further resulted in the growth and evolution of the different genres in countries and continents that were before very conservative. South Korea is a perfect example of a country that has over the years embraced the “widely considered” hip hop genre in their music scene. Korean hip hop otherwise known as K-Pop has proven a sensation especially for the millennials who consider it very trendy and fashionable and hence use it to express themselves. The research paper therefore will examine the Korean hip hop in a descriptive, cultural and historical context with focus on issues such globalization, nationalism, cultural appropriation, cosmopolitanism, musical protest, cultural authenticity and politics of identity.
History of the Korean music industry and the growth of the Korean hip hop
The Koreans are one of the most conservative communities in the world who has always kept to their traditional and cultural ways of life which included their traditional songs. Hare and Baker in recognition of the Korean folk songs note in their article “Korea’s folk music tradition, with its generous use of bright rhythms and melodies, offers a more energetic and capricious contrast to the nation’s collection of classical music works”. However, in the late eighties which also marked the end of the authoritarian military rule in Korea, there was an evolution of the music scene with the adoption of the western hip hop genre. The 1988 Seoul Olympics is also attributed to have been at the forefront in the spread of music styles including rap, rhythm, and blues among the people of Korea. The period also had youthful individuals who in addition to the political freedom they were experiencing, felt the need to spend and show their economic status.
