Gender identity is a personal acceptance of oneself as male or a female. It is intimately related to gender roles and personality caused by physical appearances. Sexual identity therefore, can be defined as either acceptance or denial of physical traits that are manifested during birth. This paper aims at explaining the aspects of social, economic and cultural processes related to health and effects of trauma to the development of sexual identity.
Sexual identity is a developmental aspect in adolescent children whereby they begin to embrace their sexuality together with other changes that takes place in their bodies. Therefore, every undesirable treatment towards children will affect them adversely. For example children traumatized due to sexual abuse are susceptible to long lasting detrimental effects such as sense of self and hinders them to embrace their sexuality. For instance, in Latino gays, childhood sexual abuse is higher with a large group being abused before the age of 13years than non- Latinos. Studies shows that childhood sexual abuse resulted in mental health issues like substance abuse and suicidal ideas. Victims of childhood sexual abuse highly reported having sex to escape loneliness or depression, having more than one partner and difficulty in expressing their feelings.
The trauma sets deeply in the child as he grows and it becomes difficult for them to establish healthy intimate relationships in adulthood if they had sexual encountered with an individual of the opposite sex. Research indicated that Latino gays in the US were due to childhood sexual molestation resulting in psychological stress leading to risky sexual behaviors involving HIV acquisition.
On the other hand, sexual orientation identity is the biological sex of a person who often arouses attraction, desires and sexual fantasies of an individual and it has three categories namely, heterosexuals, bisexual and homosexuals. In this context, social, cultural, political and religious factors play an important role in how an individual will express his or her sexuality to the outside environment. Socio-sexual identity simply means lifestyle, cultural and social connotations and it dictates how one relates with others regarding sexual orientation. This determines how one is able to relate with others in the society.
