Summary of the article
The article “Every Piece Of E-Commerce Packaging Should Be Recyclable Curbside” stresses on the importance of e-commerce packaging as a marketing tool and its role in sustainable packaging in the e-commerce industry. The number of e-commerce packages has increased significantly due to movement restriction related to the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, In July 2020, Amazon shipped 415 million packages. This phenomenon has enhanced creativity related to e-commerce packaging but has also added unnecessary non-renewable materials in the environment. In its sustainable efforts, Amazon has eliminated more than 1.18 billion non-renewable shipping boxes since the company established the Frustration-Free Packaging program in 2008. This program allows customers to choose the type of package in which what they are ordering will be wrapped. However, Morgan (2020) indicates that e-commerce companies must do more because the majority of their customers lack recycling systems. The article proposes the use of packages that are compatible with existing recycling tools or shifting from throwaway packaging and adopting use and refill systems.
