Engl 378 / MTHEL 300 Assignment 2: “Specialist Audience” Writing
There will be no in-class peer editing of this assignment, so you will need to arrange time to work on the assignment. Take advantage of today’s class time to get a good start.
The objective for this short assignment is essentially the same as the objective for assignment one, which is to develop your skills in communicating to (or grasping the communication of) a specialist audience. The added challenge of this assignment is the challenge that comes with working with one or two partners: to reach consensus about a topic, to agree on an approach, to keep the workload equitable, and to produce a stylistically consistent piece of writing.
It is understood that each person will contribute an equivalent amount of prep work, analysis, and writing to the assignment. You must also submit the group assignment agreement form that is attached to this document (the link for the document can also be found on the course outline). Apart from that, the requirements for this assignment generally match those of assignment one. The topics are also generally the same. You may choose the same option that you chose for the first assignment, but either the subject will need to be different, or you will need to choose a different analytical approach if you choose that one of you has already worked on in assignment one.
Choose ONE of the following options:
Go to Statistics Canada’s Data page (or another online source of data), find a subject that interests you, and compose a short collaborative paper analyzing the numbers using a statistical method or methods you have learned in your training. For example, you might look at cybercrime statistics over the last several years in relation to other variables. Keep in mind that this is a relatively short assignment, so the analysis does not need to be too intensive, but because there are at least two students collaborating, you will be able to do a bit more in terms of analysis. The paper should begin with a rationale for undertaking the analysis, a brief discussion of the methodology to be applied, a data and results section (including tables and graphs as needed), and a conclusion (discussing, for example, whether any noted correlations are useful or warning against misinterpreting the data). Remember, I am NOT your audience for this assignment, so there is no need to attempt to “help me understand” the text. You are writing for your specialist peers. Again, your resource librarian, Rebecca Hutchinson, is available to help you; check out her resources in the Library’s Web page. There is a tab for “data” that you might find useful.
Find four to six recent academic sources (peer reviewed journal articles) on a subject that interests you and compose a short research paper synthesizing the sources – in other words, showing where the authors corroborate each other’s findings or showing how the sources, taken together, provide a comprehensive discussion of all related factors (for example). The choice of subjects is extremely broad; find something that is useful to your own learning and preferably something fairly current: you might, for instance, look at the future of insurance in relation to autonomous vehicles, or the impacts of various current trends (cannabis legalization, vaping, retail sales of alcohol), cyber insurance, sports analytics, blockchain, or anything else you can think of. If you are interested more in criticism, consider option 3 below, which asks you to critically compare two articles on the same subject. Keep the language appropriate to your intended audience: it should be formal, precise, and technical/specialized. As I mentioned in option 1 above, please remember that your resource librarian has resources available to help you locate research articles. Cite all information accurately and include your works cited.
Locate two academic (peer-reviewed) articles on the same subject and compose a critical comparison with the objective of determining which paper makes a more compelling argument or contribution to the field. Explain to what extent the papers follow the conventional organizational structure of Problem, Plan, Data, Analysis, and Conclusion (or Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion). Evaluate the author(s) rationale for undertaking their studies. Demonstrate your statistical literacy by explaining which article has the more sensible approach, appropriate analysis, and effective communication of findings. You can also critically compare other elements such as the abstract, incorporation of supplemental information (tables and so on), and style. Consider whether the two papers are equally unbiased. It be tempting for each partner to produce an analysis of one paper, but it would be better if you worked more closely together to scrutinize the texts carefully.
Compose a proposal to collect data for scientific research. This proposal must demonstrate an understanding of the policies set out by the Office of Research at the University of Waterloo, particularly with respect to ethics. Keeping in mind that you will not actually carry out this research, discuss your rationale for the proposed study, justify the methods you would use to collect and analyze the data, and provide a time frame for the project. Excellent proposals will also provide some research validation – for example, citing a couple of sources that indicate that the problem or issue needs to be addressed through statistical research. Again, keep in mind that this proposal option is meant as a course assignment, not as the preliminary step for an actual research study; any plan you have to actually carry out the study in the future would require Office of Research clearance! Put another way, there shall be no collection of data from human participants in this course!
I welcome original proposals for an assignment option/topic as long as you meet the objectives of the assignment, which is to demonstrate a good understanding of the features of specialist writing. It is one of my goals as an instructor to give you the opportunities to produce writing that best represents the kind of writing you will do in your academic and professional careers, so I am open to suggestions.
Other assignment considerations:
double space your writing
write concisely, and always with your intended audience in mind: specialists
acknowledge all ideas from sources: use quotation marks for word-for-word quotations, and provide in-text citations. Provide citations also for content that is paraphrased
provide a full works cited at the end of your document
organize your document with headings where appropriate to improve readability
proof read your work carefully before submitting it
Group Assignment Checklist
Please read the checklist below following the completion of your group assignment. Once you have verified these points, hand in this signed checklist with your group assignment.
1. All team members have referenced and footnoted all ideas, words or other intellectual property from other sources used in the completion of this assignment.
2. A proper bibliography has been included, which includes acknowledgement of all sources used to complete this assignment.
3. This is the first time that any member of the group has submitted this assignment or essay (either partially or entirely) for academic evaluation.
4. Each member of the group has read the full content of the submission and is assured that the content is free of violations of academic integrity. Group discussions regarding the importance of academic integrity have taken place.
5. Each student has identified his or her individual contribution to the work submitted such that if violations of academic integrity are suspected, then the student primarily responsible for the violations may be identified. Note that in this case the remainder of the team may also be subject to disciplinary action.

The Future of Cyber Security InsuranceNameInstitutional AffiliationDateThe cyber security market has remained unexplored for a long period of time. However, recent developments in technology have led to the emergence of different products in cyber market such as insurance and reinsurance. Different companies are realizing that it is important to invest in the appropriate cyber insurance products despite the increased sophistication of their IT security. Different authors have also explored the topic of cybersecurity to provide a prediction of future trends in this field. Most of them observe that the cyber insurance market is growing at a faster rate and different companies are looking out for the best cyber security products. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the future trends in the field of cybersecurity as presented by different authors.
Camillo (2017) observes that indeed cyber insurance has been available as long time ago as in the 1970s. In fact there are different cyber security policies that were introduced in the 1980s to guide the operations of cyber security insurance. Interest in the field of cyber security grew following the dotcom crash and the 9/11 attacks CITATION Cam17 \l 1033 (Camillo, 2017). The field of cyber security has also met a number of challenges that have led to the development of sophisticated cyber security insurance programs and products. According to Alqahtani (2016), the development of different social media platforms have increased communication and sharing of information. On the other side, the author also notes that development of social media has increased the cyber security vulnerabilities of organizations meaning that the cyber security insurance agencies need to develop different products to cater for different needs CITATION Alq16 \l 1033 (Alqahtani, 2016).
Due to the faster evolution of the cyber security insurance. Insurance providers are now becoming innovative by developing different specialized and innovative products. Common services that are included in the cyber security insurance policies include the recovery of data, loss or damage to the digital assets of a company, cyber extortion and data breaches in case of dishonest employees. Cyber defense investment also remains a major issue in most companies due to the large costs involved. Alqahtani (2016) observes that the deployment of cyber defense is an expensive process and there are so many things involved in order to make sure it is effective. In the case of cyber-attack, the attacker can utilize only one unexploited weakness and gain entry into the system. This means that cyber-attack is indeed easier, cheaper and faster as compared to cyber defense CITATION Alq16 \l 1033 (Alqahtani, 2016). This makes it difficult even for companies and organizations to decide on which insurance products to pursue since they do not understand how effective their cyber defense is. However, Gomez (2019) observes that in order for a company to decide on the appropriate insurance pr...
