Research Paper Instructions:

School Nurse Certification Program NURS 616
The Role of the School Nurse II
The Research Paper provides the student with the opportunity to write a scholarly paper on their topic of interest selected. According to the Purdue Online Writing Lab:
A research paper is the culmination and final product of an involved process of research, critical thinking, source evaluation, organization, and composition. It is, perhaps, helpful to think of the research paper as a living thing, which grows and changes as the student explores, interprets, and evaluates sources related to a specific topic... The research paper serves not only to further the field in which it is written, but also to provide the student with an exceptional opportunity to increase her knowledge in that field. (2021)
A research paper is not a summary or regurgitation of sources. A well written research paper requires students to spend time identifying sources and reading them in their entirety with the intent of offering their own critical interpretation or perspective of the literature. This cannot be done by merely reading the abstract. Students must read the articles to gain an understanding of each study’s aim, methodologies used and the results in order to fully critique the literature and provide a thoughtful interpretation. This interpretation should be presented as a synthesis, and not a summary, in the student’s own voice.
Assignment Guidelines:
The Research Paper is a four-part assignment.
• Students select a topic and develop a research question: Part 1
• Students complete a Literature Log: Part 2
• Students prepare an Abstract: Part 3
• Students develop the final Research Paper: Part 4
Part 1 Topic Selection and Research Question
Part 1 of the Research Paper assignment involves the selection of a topic and submission of a research question.
Research Paper Part 1: Topic Selection and Research Question Assignment Purpose:
Students can choose any appropriate topic related to content within NURS 616 and develop a
research question to complete their paper.
***If an ACE is being selected, one of the 10 ACEs as identified in the CDC Kaiser study must be used.
The following website can be used as listed below:

The pdf copy of the original study on ACEs by Felitti et al. (1998) will be located in the assignment dropbox area for your reference.
___________ University School Nurse Certification Program NURS 616
The Role of the School Nurse II
Once the topic is selected, it should be narrowed down to prepare a research question. The research question in this assignment must include the following three essential elements: (1) a population (P), (2) an intervention (I) and (3) an outcome (O). Since there is no comparison required, there will be no (C) for this assignment. Students must also identify a evidence based-school-based intervention that will appropriately improve student learning outcomes/improving success in the school environment for the topic selected.
Some examples of research questions are listed below:
1. Is (School-based intervention) effective in improving success in the school environment in students with (ACE/Risk Behavior/Special need)?
2. Do students with (ACE/Risk Behavior/Special need) that are exposed to (school-based intervention) have better learning outcomes in the school setting?
3. Do students who are (pregnant, LGBTQ, Depressed) that are exposed to (school-based interventions) feel safer in the school environment leading to better learning outcomes?
**You are not limited to selecting/using the research templates provided above. However, your research question must be approved.**
Submission guidelines:
Please submit your topic and research question via the assignment dropbox. The requirements are as follows:
• Submit a one (1) page word document
• Include your name and a description of the assignment when saving the document:
o RP Pt1 Ephraim
• Select a topic of interest:
o Main topic: Adolescent/Teen pregnancy
• Work on narrowing down the topic:
o What time frame do you want to research?
▪ amount of teen pregnancies over the last 10 years
o Where am I conducting my research?
▪ The United States – more specifically – Middlesex county, New Jersey
o What issue do I want to discuss about teen pregnancy?
▪ High school completion rates
o Narrowed down topic:
▪ high school completion rates of pregnant adolescents/teens over the past 10 years in Middlesex County NJ
• An evidence-based, school-based intervention that does not have to include the school nurse must be identified in order to complete your research question.
o Students must complete a preliminary search of the literature to ensure there are
evidence-based school based interventions to address the topic selected
__________ University School Nurse Certification Program NURS 616
The Role of the School Nurse II
*Including the school nurse may narrow your search/choice of interventions. Keep in mind that your program/intervention can be organized/monitored by the school nurse or not include the school nurse at all.)
o Example of a school-based intervention: in-school support programs
• Prepare the research question (use one of the templates above or develop a question of your own
▪ Include the research question on your document:
Do pregnant adolescents/tens who attend in-school support programs experience higher graduation rates?

Obesity among Elementary Students
Obesity is highly widespread in the United States (US), especially among children. According to Schroeder et al. (2017), approximately 17% of children in the US suffer from childhood obesity, with 4% experiencing severe obesity. Childhood obesity affects not only children’s health but also their academic outcomes. Lovell (2017) posits that obesity among US students is associated with poor school attendance and lower academic achievement levels. Therefore, addressing obesity can improve the health and educational outcomes of overweight/obese students. This responsibility falls under the purview of the school nurse. Thus, this research paper will focus on school-based interventions for obesity among elementary students.
School nurses can design school-based interventions to address obesity, improve students’ physical fitness and promote academic excellence. According to Powell et al. (2017), school nurses can get involved in creating school-based interventions that reduce sedentary behavior among students through improved physical activity to reduce obesity. Consequently, increased physical activity can enhance physical fitness and improve students' academic performance. Sc...
