1.This term, we learned about the qualitative and the quantitative research paradigms. These paradigms have profoundly different ways of conceptualizing research, characterized by different world views. EPISTEMOLOGY
Epistemology refers to how people deal with knowledge and how to justify it, or simply, the theory of knowledge. The epistemology of quantitative research lies in the pursuit of truth and scientific pragmatism. Its justification can be confirmed using empirical validation of educated guesses through universal scientific standards. These standards signify analytical and procedural processes that are necessary for quantitative research to pursue and involve the system arrangements, organization, facts, paradigms, explanations, change, reliability, measurement, evolution, balance, and form, and function. In other words, quantitative research deals with a concrete process or absolutism, discernible through the use of quantitative means such as gradings, levels, and percentages.
In contrast to quantitative research, the epistemology of qualitative research deals with relativism and anecdotal standards. It involves individual or group justification of contrasting ideas and the justification of doctrines and beliefs. It is valuable in the identification of intangible ideas and factors such as social norms, socioeconomic status, gender roles, cultures and origin, and religion. When used in combination with quantitative research, it can better understand complex realities.
METHODOLOGY
The methodology deals with the classification, review, and justification of research methods. In layman’s terms, it asks on how the step-by-step process that the researcher must follow to investigate a field of knowledge.
Quantitative Research
A quantitative study is characterized by its methodology that justifies each objective of the research using validated methods of assessment to obtain data and information concerning the research problem. In a research proposal, this is written in the future tense, while the sentences must be written in the past tense when published.
The first step here is to examine the research question provided by the researchers. The more clearly defined the research question is, the better the process of formulation of the methodology.
The second step is to identify the proper population and the sampling method. The study population refers to the group of individuals who will participate in the study. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are used to identify these individuals to prevent the researchers from bias. The sample size will also be determined based on the previous research (investigate using the review of related literature), and it must be representative of the population. The larger the sample size, the higher the power of the study.
