In the past decade, several scandals involving food commodities from Asia has circled the globe. Scandals that have shocked the whole nation and made them rethink about the food that they eat and where it comes from. One of the most well-known among these scandals was that of Chinese Milk Scandal of 2008 in China. It was during this time when six babies were killed hundreds of thousands reportedly became ill, particularly in the Gansu province (BBC.com, 2010). Upon a close examination, authorities found out that these incidences are linked to the use of melamine by some milk producers to increase the protein levels upon testing, which are required to pass quality inspection tests (BBC.com, 2010).
Contrary to this, a study done by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that the risks of using melamine significantly outweigh its advantages since it has no nutritional value and can cause a variety of diseases. In fact, this compound is primarily used for the production of other household commodities such as plastics, concretes, Formica, and even fertilizers. Just as in the Chinese scandal, the compound is only used to artificially pump protein levels even if it results to other complications in the newborn’s body (The Food Journal, 2007). While this seems to be an isolated case, reports have noted that about twenty-two Chinese dairy companies have been using the same technique to pass rigid inspection qualities set upon by the state authorities as well as other countries where these products are being exported.
