Research Paper Instructions:

Part 1: Research and Annotated Bibliography
Digital Learning Connections icon
Step 1. Using the ACE Library database, conduct a search for three peer-reviewed articles related to your issue/problem and behavioral learning theory (classical and/or current).
Step 2. Begin development of an annotated bibliography by recording each article in APA format and writing a paragraph summarizing how the article relates behaviorism to the identified issue/problem. Include the annotated bibliography in your Module 2 submission. You will develop additional parts of the annotated bibliography in subsequent modules and submit a compilation of all entries in Module 5.
Part 2: Planning Document Development
Begin development of a planning document including the following steps:
Step 3. Begin the design of a health and wellness change initiative to address the issue/problem identified in Module 1, and consider the potential impact of behaviorism on the initiative. In a planning document you create:
Relate the identified issue/problem and behavioral theory to the development of the health initiative.
Step 4. Identify a specific behavior related to the health and wellness issue or problem which can be at least partially be resolved through education. Analyze the specific behavior you would like to change in terms of antecedents (preceding circumstances)-behavior-consequences. Take a baseline measurement of the target behavior using a tool of your choice. Include the findings in the planning document.
Step 5. Suggest one or more potential strategies you might use to change the behavior. Be sure to address strategies based on the age-appropriateness and the specific developmental stage of your target population.
What are the basic assumptions/principles of this theory relevant to your issue or problem/demographic needs?
How will these strategies motivate and engage learners?
Step 6. In 1-2 paragraphs, summarize your potential strategies in the planning document. What are the strategies and their purposes? How can they be used to inform the target population?

Applying Behavior Learning Theory
Behaviorism or the behavior learning theory posits that all behaviors are learned and influenced by one’s environment. As per this theory, environmental factors have more influence on people’s behaviors than innate factors. Therefore, it is possible to influence people’s behaviors by altering their environment.
In the recent past, suicidality rates and depression among adolescents have been on the rise. Different theories have been introduced to help shed light on the issue. The most prominent one involves how today’s environment continually influences or pushes adolescents to instances of depression and suicidality. In the same light, by altering the environment, maybe something can be done to help prevent these cases and the imminent danger of having an entire generation struggle with depression and suicidality. According to Abreu & Santos (2008), it is possible to influence the environment and enhance their efforts to get better. Abreu and Santos write that positive reinforcement involves the behaviors that have a positive and fulfilling experience and that people find rewarding. By developing models around the behaviorism theory, there is a chance that interventions or solutions to the issue under study.
One way models around behaviorism theory can be developed by strategizing ways to prevent adolescents from substance abuse and drug use. Another way would be to create an approach to help encourage the proper use of social media platforms. These two strategies will influence the behavior of adolescents and their interaction with their environment.
Galaif, E. R., Sussman, S., Newcomb, M. D., & Locke, T. F. (2007). Suicidality, depression, and alcohol use among adolescents: a review of empirical findings. International journal of adolescent medicine and health, 19(1), 27–35.https://doi.org/10.1515/ijamh.2007.19.1.27
In this article, Galaif and his colleagues explore suicide, depression, and alcohol use among teenagers or adolescents. Suicide is among the leading causes of death among adolescents today. Individuals aged between 15 and 24 continue to suffer at the hands of depression, a key risk factor for suicide. However, the researchers extend their research to include alcohol use among adolescents noting that it is closely related to depression and the occurrence of suicidal thoughts. The researchers point out that substance abuse is one of the most serious risk factors of attempted and completed suicide among adolescents. This article’s relationship or connection to the behavior learning theory lies in introducing substance abuse as a risk factor for both depression and suicide. The learned behavior this article considers is substance abuse, which then leads to increased rates of depression, and both attempted and completed suicides.
