          ECS 110 - WIKI RESEARCH   Name: Institution: Course: Date:                                                              ECS 110 Wiki-research Sexism refers to gender based discrimination which in most cases is directed towards the female gender.  According to Collins and Barnes (2014), privileged “self”  in gender arises as a result of one’s feeling superior than the members of the other gender hence deserve a preferential treatment at he expense of others.  The dominant identity in reference to gender as shaped by the social construction is the male gender who has been constructed to  have the sense of “maleness” hence superior to the female gender.   The production of dominance in terms of gender can be traced from the performative roles that are assigned to each gender as early as after birth. The dominant group in terms of gender can  be made visible by the way we treat each gender.  According to Judith Butler, parents as well as society tends to assume and construct a male child towards specific expectations in terms of performance of dominant roles which eventually puts the male gender in a superior position to the female gender (Big Think, 2011). The normal normal in terms of gender is produced through  the expected behavior, roles and clothing which are some of the normal identifiers of a given gender.  According to Lorber (n.d), there is a high sensitivity in identification of a person with a specific gender within the society to an extent that a failure to identify one’s gender physically (from dressing, looks, speech and behavior) may cause some discomfort.             The marginalized other in gender is produced by the preferential treatment of the one person simply because of their gender as opposed to other capabilities.
