The Harry Potter series depicts a fantasy world and the protagonist learns and develops independence by choosing to fight his battles carefully depending on whether something is good or evil. The horror and comic story and Harry is represented in situations where he has to choose whether he wishes to return to the school of wizardry, and in the world of magic he becomes a reluctant hero in fighting evil. The story of Harry Potter highlights the case for moral development through emphasizing different scenarios where the characters have to choose the moral good to fight the evil spell of other characters. Learning to use moral reasoning allows Harry Potter to develop a sense of morality and rely on ethical principles when making decisions.
Rowling highlights the theme of moral reasoning in the Harry Potter series and this is particularly when the people have to work together as a team. For instance, the students depicted in the story are divided into streams while playing Quidditch in the wizardry school and then work as teams as they compete and the schools that achieve the highest points are recognized for their achievement (Binnendyk & Schonert-Reichl, 2002). The case for highlighting teamwork is that it allows the people to learn about moral responsibility as the people work collectively to support competing and positive social behaviors. They grow more aware of their duties in the society. Binnendyk, & Schonert-Reichl (2002) argued that focusing on equal participation of students in education and collective responsibility inspired the people to develop into a responsible member of the society. This is consistent with the observation that the social environment influences how individuals make decisions since they develop to integrate moral reasoning.
Moral growth is associated with the process where people grow from being egocentric and selfish to more socially responsible individuals. People exhibit different levels of moral reasoning during the stages of development (Binnendyk & Schonert-Reichl, 2002). The case of Harry Potter as the character who has the highest level of moral reasoning among his peers is the reflected by his actions to focus on fair procedures that respect social rights and considering how his decisions affect individuals. For instance, Harry sought to ensure that the learning environment was suitable for all students, even if it meant him risking it all to achieve this (Binnendyk & Schonert-Reichl, 2002).
Moral growth and development as represented by Harry Potter, his friends and Prof. Dumbledore represent the ideas that children learn from the environment and make choices based on morality and what they have internalized. The boys develop are more thoughtful as they develop and get older, as they rely on ethical principles to make decisions. The series demonstrates different aspects of their development and even consider social justice. Rowling separates good and bad characters by contrasting their behavior and actions when faced with similar problems.
